Micro Surfacing

Micro Surfacing Introduction

What is Micro Surfacing?

Micro surfacing is a mixture of polymerized bitumen emulsion, specially graded fine aggregates, cement, water and necessary additives, mixed homogeneously on site in a special Microsurfacing machine, uniformly spread immediately over a properly prepared surface evenly by means of a spreader box attached behind the machine. It is an environment friendly cold mix application treatment applied over an existing pavement surface which is structurally sound, but the surface shows signs of premature ageing, aggregate loss, cracking, high degree of polishing etc. Micro surfacing helps in preservation of pavement strength and can be used both for preventive and periodic renewal treatment.
As Per MORT & H 2013 Clause S14.3.1

Micro Surfacing

Advantages

Micro surfacing helps in preservation of pavement strength and can be used both as a preventive maintenance treatment or and periodic renewal treatment on a preferably low, medium or heavy traffic. It can be used for pavements in urban and rural areas, primary and inter-state routes, residential streets, highways, and toll roads. It can also be used on the top of single coat surface dressing (Cape seal), on graded premix carpet without seal coat and also on dense bituminous Macadam/Bituminous macadam.

▪ Longer Life and reduces total pavement oxidation
▪ Waterproof Surface – Protection from water ingress
▪ Improved driving comfort
▪ Quick setting, early opening to traffic
▪ No disturbance to existing Pavement Profile & Drainage / Kerb
▪ Increased Skid Resistance
▪ Environment Friendly – reduced emissions
▪ Savings in Natural resources and energy
▪ No rolling is required
▪ Economical
